Elephant Perspective

Two Giraffes Perspective
The piece of artwork I chose to blog about is one that I have always been fascinated with. This sculpture was made by the French artist Matthieu Robert-Ortis in 2016 and is a perspective based-thin metal sculpture. As you can see the white background highlights the black frame that makes either two Giraffes or an Elephant depending on where you are standing. This such a neat concept for a sculpture as it could look like nothing from one angle and something completely different from another.

Lines

When it comes to the lines of this sculpture, they are quite basic when looking at how each of the animals is composed, just your standard outline. However when looking at it in person, or a walk around video, the lines are a mess and stick out making it look like 3 dimensional scribbling until you see it from one of the intended angles.

Shape

The shape is one of the more unique elements of this piece and it’s hard to get a good concept of the shape of this from just pictures so I linked a video HERE. This is a real three dimensional sculpture that appears to be two dimensional when looking at the animals, quite elaborate shape work.

Color and Value

Part of why I chose this sculpture for this blog was because it’s not a normal painting, I have spent more time analyzing paintings than sculptures and this one just stood out to me. Unfortunately part of the problem when looking at things out of the norm is sometimes they can be lacking, this sculpture is lacking in color with exception of the eyes of the elephant. However one could say there is enough color in that and the contrast between the black and white. These colors do make all the fine details stand out and if there were more it could be harmful to the shape of the sculpture.

Texture and Pattern

The texture is nothing special here either, again that’s not the focus or point of this sculpture. The evidence of their being a patter is lacking, but if you consider the similarities between how both the giraffes and the elephant are shaped you could find some aspects that could be considered patterns; such as the detailing lines and overall style.

Perspective

The perspective of this sculpture is the main point. It’s showing many different things upon the first inspection, for some it’s a mess of metal lines making a three dimensional scribble, for others it’s an elephant or a pair of giraffes. It’s all of these things at the same time and really shows how people may see something differently depending on how they first come across it.
